If you’re taking Will Howard as anything other than a floor raiser you’re in trouble.

I’d move that mofo to tight end.

When even UT's lowest rated & ranked DB in the '24 recruiting class is a potential burner, it's safe to assume that Guilbeau (who reportedly ran a 4.71 40-yard dash coming outta High School) was recruited over.

This kid is gonna be a baller. He get it's mentally. And he's a natural leader. Sark and Co hit a home run with him. Mucho excited to see him play.

Bama? They have Jam Miller, Richard Young, and Justice Haynes. And maybe Roydell Williams coming back. Both Young and Haynes are specimens. Seems to be a crowded room. If one of Young or Haynes were to hit the portal, I'd hope Choice gets all over it. They're truly special

Assuming he wasn't recruited into the portal by a school, and doesn't already have an NIL deal with Ole Miss lined up, this CJ Daniels kid from Liberty would be a hell of a Wide Receiver pickup out of the portal.  Brandon Harris (and JM Jones, Texas' Asst Dir of Player Personnel) are following him on the twitters - though  no idea when that happened since you can't look at follows in chronological order anymore.  Given that Daniels was a 2-star out of Georgia in the class of 2020, it seems unlikely these follows are leftover from high school recruiting.

FWIW - PFF has him graded as a top 10 receiver in the country.

Had some really nice catches against Oregon in their bowl game including the one below:

Anyone else find it funny that Aggy finally lands a solid to great transfer portal addition, and it’s at the one position that is already crowded in the DL? To blow their wad on that when they have huge depth issues at every other position is just coaching criminal negligence.

burning more money on a DL when you have huge weaknesses at LB and CB is a bad decision on defense alone. that doesn't even consider OL!

Yes, I also find it funny that double digit portal transfers was a legitimate necessity for them to even field a complete football team next season, yet they are using evidence of these commitments (all of whom are spares with the exception of Scourton) as some sort of positive referendum on Elko.

Really the only departing transfer so far that I could see having a material impact, feel like he was in line to get significant snaps next season. Still, with Bledsoe, Bryant, Mitchell, and even Swanson waiting in the wings, in Bo we trust. Retaining Collins is huge and getting Caldwell becomes even more important now.

I think Carter is who he is. He wasn’t going to be a 30 snaps a game guy. He was a rotational piece.

@Hiphopopotamos what did his PFF grades look like? His production market share that Dunlap does for defenders was ranked 23rd on the defense and in the sub-replacement level category.

A few portal team notes from IT

Here’s what we’re hearing about players remaining of leaving, but please keep in mind things can change in a hurry. Sark can be persuasive.

Players staying or leaving

— Already we’ve seen guys like Xavier Worthy, Jonathon Brooks, and Byron Murphy publicly announce their intentions to enter the 2024 NFL Draft. We feel strongly you’ll see a few more declare soon.

This morning IT reported Adonai Mitchell is expected to declare a year early.

— Another player expected to enter the NFL Draft is Kitan Crawford. He’s looking to get drafted or catch on as an UDFA as a special teamer.

Players have until January 15 to declare for the draft.

— Our sources still believe Jerrin Thompson will look for a fresh start by entering the portal.

— IT heard further confirmation on Alfred Collins staying while making calls on Thursday evening.

— Ryan Watts remains likely to stay with the stipulation he’s open to playing safety.

— The latest we’ve heard on David Gbendais he wants to stay but there’s also been some talk about him following Jeff Choate to Nevada. It’s tricky to read this situation because there’s been some speculation Morice Blackwell will enter the portal in search of more playing time. It’ll be interesting to see how this dynamic plays out.

— We’ve heard of a handful of offensive linemen who may look to hit the portal, particularly in 2023 class. However, those players may elect to stay through the Spring to see how reps and rotations look.

— Texas wants backup quarterback Charles Wright to solidify third string behind Quinn Ewers and Arch Manningbut sources indicate Wright is portal bound. Third string quarterback will boil down to Trey Owens, Cole Lourd, and Joe Tatum.

Tossups

These players’ decisions are up in the air.

— Sources weren’t sure but thought Jaylon Guilbeau might enter the portal in December. Obviously that didn’t happen. It sounds like sources are still unsure on what he’ll do but entering the portal is a possibility. It’s believed Austin Jordan will remain at Texas.

— Morice Blackwell was mentioned above. Perhaps his decision is dependent on what Gbenda does. With Anthony Hill possibly playing Mike, Blackwell would have more reps open to him at Will.

Dates to know

The team reports back on January 16th. The first workouts are January 20th.

Thus will begin the long march for the 2024 Longhorns, complete with new leaders, new talent, new questions, and new answers.

Texas DL's grades for this season:  Trill is in that third tier after Murphy/Sweat and then Collins.
