Let's look it this way. Their support is strong enough that the GOP is not only failing to summarily dismissing Trump's attempts, but is actively aiding and abetting. Ten years ago, nobody would be comfortable with the thought of either political party going this far to delegitimize our election process and institutions.

So, sure, you're right, not all 71 million are rabid, mouth frothing primates in discount camo gear, and few are galvanized enough to take the streets. But that's not the only measure of power. When you have tens of millions of people cheering on a coup attempt that is in progress, there is indeed a legitimate threat. And, as I said, even if not now, there is no active force pulling these people back to reality. They're only getting increasingly untethered.

I certainly hope that Trump's failure will 1. be accomplished and 2. take the wind out of their sails. But egads we are not in a good way right now.

You also have LEOs out there who don't see anything wrong with a militia that later has a plot to kidnap someone and hold a trial wherein the outcome has almost certainly been decided to end with torture and death.

How can anyone look at the Tulsa Massacre and think, 'that's old news?' It started with a young black teen and a young white girl in an elevator. And ended up with several hundred dead. The emotion with that was the 'how dare they' with respect to black citizens and now the emotion is not unlike that 'how dare they' of the past.

In other news, Biden's lead in PA and GA keeps growing. PA over 47,000 now after a batch from Philly. GA slowly approaching 13,000.  Oh, and Nevada at 36,000. And a big batch from Maricopa last night really put a damper on a Trump comeback.

Georgia is still recounting regardless, correct? That has to happen.

What a sad state of affairs Trump has created in this country. I remember after the election in 2016 I naively thought maybe he wouldn't be able to cause that much damage because he's such a moron. I really though other republicans and people in power would keep his idiotic tendencies in check.  Sadly, the opposite has been true and he's spread his incredibly damaging mindset all over this nation.

I think that's the part I'm most disappointed about.  I thought there were enough respectable people on the right (yes, there are some) would say "ok, you're not gonna do this shit." but it appears as if Trump has bullied them into submission

What’s most pathetic is that a fucking West Point grad is so terrified of that fat orange slob. Just a yellow bellied coward.

Yeah, I'm not saying this won't end in violence, but that was more Alexander Haig than Alexander Hamilton.

Foreign countries need to cut off diplomacy with our State Department.  And I can't believe I just typed that.  If we're not going recognize our own election results, other nations need to stop engaging with the Pompeo State Department.

we may legitimately need a shadow government.  that is so third world.

This.  We're not looking at a turd in the punch bowl.  We're looking at a punch bowl full of millions of turds, mixed with runny shit, all mixed in with the punch.  And we've got to find some way to make that safe to drink.

Got any ideas?  I'm fresh out.

Whatever the solution is, it'll be like trying to boil an ocean, and the trouble will be picking the right ocean to boil, because there are a lot to choose from.

I suspect it will involve turning a weapon used against us into a defense. For instance, the viral nature of the internet and social media could become a vector for informing people en masse. I've often wondered why we don't have something like Wikipedia, but for aggregating all legitimate journalism for current events, so that we could refute bullshit faster than trolls produce it. Make it easy for people to win arguments with trolls online, and an army of counter-trolls will practically raise itself.

(Of course, overpowering disinformation on social media may not even fix the problem... this is a fucked up system we're dealing with)

they are talking to 70M+ americans. sure, biden won, convincingly, in terms of both popular and electoral vote, but this shit stirring is going to end in violence, and it seems that is the fucking goal.

it's appalling, the lack of integrity and personal morality. i cannot understand, in a million years, what it would be like to live in such disingenuous skin. these people aren't true believers, they are too smart. they know they are lying, and they believe the endgame, such as it is, is worth it.

It's gonna be ugly and out of the ordinary, but a transition will occur, and all legitimate world leaders will recognize it, as will SCOTUS. But the doomers' concern is completely valid too, but I think it will ultimately be less doomy than some think.

Doomers going to doom. How about the 75ish million who voted right and one of the higher by percentage turn outs in American history. Majority of turnout did the right thing so that is optimistic to me. Yall always bitch that turn outs are shit but when massive turn outs happen you then bitch about the losing sides turnout being higher. Ofc it’s going to be higher due to shear numbers. Jfc.

This.  Read the Twitter thread referenced above.  Trump is throwing everything at the wall, hoping something get's him sworn in for a second term.  The GOP is fine with either result:  He loses, but goes down swinging, or autocracy.  It's win-win.   They will of course move the goal posts when the votes get certified, but I'm not sure they can outfox the process here. Despite the media trying to paint this as a close election, it's not. And that may be something Trump and the GOP just can't overcome.

That relates to Molly McKew's twitter rant (I put it in the Republican thread). We, the people are on the front lines of this. The shoppers in El Paso, the random schoolchildren trying to learn, the moviegoers, and clubbers (ok, the clubs are closed right now in most places), anyone out and about trying to get to work, or to family, or simply exist. Mitch has security, Trump has security and excellent health care. And their attitude is SUCKS TO YOUR ASSMAR.

Ugh. Sorry I am doomy again. Ultimately, I hope that DJT will lose his ratings and we're done In January. However, that doesn't solve the autocratic leaning electorate problem so let's hopefully motivate the higher numbers in majority to stay in tune with keeping democracy.

Yeah, but the game changes when Trump demands the GOP electorate to elect him in December.

i don't think of myself as a doomer. i don't even think i've got an invite to @Brisketexan's ledge. but this rhetoric is fucking dangerous, they know it, and they continue to bandy it about.

the difference between 75M and 70M is actually pretty narrow if part of the 70M decide to take some matters into their own hands.

these administration officials need to be boxed in as effectively as possible. i'm mostly focused on the worst of the worst: kush, miller, barr, pompeo - these are the real dangerous people and they are flirting with treason, if they haven't already jumped into the deep end.

Georgia Recount Law: State law does not require an automatic recount of votes. However, a candidate can request a recount if the difference between the number of votes is not more than 1%. That request has to be made within two business days of the results being certified. (right now Biden leads by 0.25%)

So far, 78 counties out of the state's giant patchwork of 159 have certified their results to state officials

The state has imposed a Friday deadline (11/13/2020), which is exactly one week before the Secretary of State's Office needs to certify the whole statewide results, according to Georgia law.

Georgia certification date 11/20/2020

I don't think that would be of much use because, at least in my experience, "legitimate journalism" is powerless against these people. Any news they don't like is fake, remember?

They're determined to live in their own retarded reality. I don't see any way to fight that.

I see a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum, you have the truly batshit. On the other end of the spectrum, you have people who are misinformed, stubborn, and in denial. We're in a tug-of-war with them. I agree that it's a waste of time to argue with the people at the end of the rope, but we have to bring the ones near the middle over to our side. At some point, after enough tugging, we might get the fat part of their bell curve back into reality.

Like I said, though, it's a boil-the-ocean problem.

I don't think you addressed the gist of his post, which wasn't doom about the number of dotard votes.

Let's take a look at the whole picture: all major NATO allies have now congratulated Biden. Even Turkey. If you think that NATO is going to allow its largest contributor, both militarily and financially, and the most technologically advanced nuclear power in the world turn into an authoritarian nation with favorable ties to Russia, you're out of your mind. I don't think the Trump family and Kushner have the stones to take it where it really needs to go for them to keep Trump as president. They're bluffing the hell out of it, but they're quickly running out of gas.

Given I know a bunch of lawyers are here, is anyone else chuckling at the NYT and Lincoln Project targeting Jones Day?  Isn't JD just involved with the portion of the PA case related to ballots received after election day (which is pretty much moot at this point given Biden's lead) and not some of the more ridiculous filings.  But they are definitely putting other similar firms on notice they won't be able to collect fees on Trump's wild goose chase without taking a big ass PR and reputational hit.  I have zero doubt JD partners have been getting calls today from pissed off clients asking why they are involved in this nonsense.  Would love to be a fly in the wall in those management meetings.

Cross posting this from the Election Lawsuit thread.

My concern is there is a lot of noise out of the Trump campaign, and Democrats (as far as I see) have not been actively pushing back, relying on some members of the media and twitterverse to do their work. Problem is the Republicans are united in their bullshit, and the endless lies become normalized until more people believe them

DNC and Biden Campaign has done an absolute shit job countering QAnon bullshit, stealing the vote, socialists, and now the current lies.etc.

I'd like them to get their hands dirty - highlight the racists, the anti-democratic, obstructionist, conniving sons of bitches the likes of . They need to starting putting out Lincoln Project'esque ads to fucking pummel the Rs, but they are "too nice". Time to take off the kid gloves and put on the brass knuckles.
