Yeah, no. Tried this with my stepmom about the socialist PPP loan she accepted and the Medicare she receives. She said she pays taxes so she's owed that money. Nevermind that she runs a small business and pays all of her day to day expenses out of that business and basically reports no taxes.

I'm honestly tempted to report her to the IRS for the whistleblower reward money.

My first reaction was also "do it" and the I realized that she'd just blame it all on the communist leftists hating on small business and weaponizing the IRS against normal, god-fearing american citizens. Not, you know, show any accountability for her own decisions and actions.

That's exactly right. She's apoplectic about the new hires in the IRS. I said great let's find all of those people who cheat on their taxes.

Perception is a strange thing.  I find it interesting to hear 'jobs' touted as a win.  In enterprise tech just about all I see is layoffs.  Of course, I think the layoffs are bullshit.  Just last year you hear about 'record profits.'  This year its all cost cutting measures.  Disney just announced 7k layoffs.   Nobody seems to save the profits to keep from having to fuck the non high level management.  I'm sure the CEO's enjoyed their new yachts.

Please don't misunderstand, not blaming Biden at all, and maybe all non-tech industries that I don't pay attention to (which is all of them) are doing great.   Just my perception of the employment picture is doom and gloom for the moment.  And that perception isn't from watching any TV.   But I'm sure next year will be hiring time, rinse and repeat the cycle.

I also look forward to groceries being reasonable again.  Heh.  I'm sure that will happen any day now.  Same with my natural gas bill.  Oh shit, I'm just bitching now, sorry.

I'm not gonna get too worked up about layoffs that don't materially affect the unemployment rate.  I get the point that high paying jobs are being replaced with lower-paying jobs.  Let's not lose signt of the fact that minimum wage increases have made those lower paying jobs much more attractive to people without the education, etc. to aspire higher in the near term.

"Oh no, we're helping the poors again!"

Saw this and found it interesting https://www.politifact.com/article/2023/feb/08/fact-checking-joe-bidens-2023-state-union-address/

No real whoppers from Joey Two Scoops.

And same for Huckabeef, which is interesting, because I'm sure it's hard to fact-check a speech mostly devoid of facts. https://www.politifact.com/article/2023/feb/08/fact-checking-sarah-huckabee-sanders-republican-re/

One whopper, nothing pants on fire.

Won't someone think of the corporations!!!!

Let's pretend the 2.5 T number is accurate, the fed took 17.5% of corporate profits as tax revenue. That's a percentage of just profit. Let's do the math on personal individual income then.

Personal individual income should come in around 21 trillion this year. I can't find a data point for avg disposable income but let's just assume that the average in the US is 40% disposable (and I feel this number is probably very generous). That leaves us with 8.4 T in actual disposable income after expenses (rents/food/utilities/transpo/etc) of which the govt took 2.4 T. That's an effective tax rate of 28.5%. That number just rises if the avg disposable income is less than 40% which I suspect it is.

Keep sucking that corp dick though...

The crazy part is that there is a fair to good chance he isn’t connected to any corporate entity and doesn’t benefit from this situation at all. He’s just been conditioned to go against his own interests.

What a lot of people don’t realize is these corporations laying people off in the news are typically global corporations. If Disney is laying off 7K people, chances are only 1k or 2k of those people are American layoffs. The other 5k don’t really affect things here at home. It sucks for the small number of Americans losing their jobs, but most of them are desirable enough employees, and the job market is still in good enough shape, where they should be able to find something before long.

The jobs data was a bit rigged in January. ADP reported only 160K jobs in January. BLS reported 517K. The BLS implemented a new population control adjustment that bumped it up from 84K. People are losing jobs. There is less demand. That means layoffs. Tech jobs always happen first. Tech is a luxury item. Next up is Tourism (Disney).

Activist shareholders are having a moment because big tech is running really inefficient due to some over hiring while pulling forward a ton of revenue and missing all their fin plans for FY23 and having to really throw cold water on FY24 ambitions for growth

Republicans bitching about the deficit? While voting for candidates who explode the deficit? Without fail. For decades. It’s not like there isn’t a historical record to examine, and judge which party has done more to address the issue. Just shows they are bitching to hear themselves bitch.

I think the secret to that thinking is that not all programs that make up the deficit are equal.

It’s true.  You could annilate the federal government beyond Medicare, Medicaid, SS, DOD, and Veterans care and we’d still run a deficit.

it ain’t the department of wasteful bullshit that got us in the red.

we are a senior support and healthcare company with a military and legacy war fighting costs. The rest is couch chamge.

Are you sure the thinking isn’t that  citizens have (had) no right to make the determinations they have made, based on history and current opinion? That SS, Medicare, Medicaid, and government coordinated health insurance must go, through hook, crook, and damn precedent and the Ninth Amendment?

Not saying you’re wrong on the jobs numbers (I presume you’re citing Barry Habib), but I think it’s interesting that the Eurodollar podcast guys didn’t mention this in their Tuesday broadcast.  Instead they described it as an anomaly.

I am citing Habib. I also read the BLS report because I was curious about the population control adjustment. Maybe it’s confirmation bias, but it just doesn’t make sense why the BLS numbers were so high

That’s interesting, one of the talking heads on discussion panel on CNBC during the announcement last week said something to the effect of either we are measuring jobs wrong or wages wrong because otherwise productivity is screwed.  Everyone just sailed right by that comment, but it caught my attention for the moment.

1.38T being the current deficit.  correct?

So your proposal is a 72% corporate tax rate and no expansion of government spending?

You could up the rate to 100% . However, the medicare for all people are probably going to have a hard time getting that off the ground with the remaining .70T.

I also think there might be a wee bit of blowback from a 100% corporate tax rate.  Dividend cuts are really going to blow a hole in a lot of peoples retirement models.  I guess they just suck it up.  Fair share and all.

That actually wasn't your point as far as I can see. It's a shame you abandoned your stand on being careful with tax rate for corporations. It's one of the most valid you've ever made.

In reading Woodward's Fear, I learned something about corporate taxes. A big pressure on setting the rate is competition with other countries; if they have lower tax rates, corporations will likely move there. Should the corporations move, the US collects no tax. This argument was made by one of Trump's advisers whose name you'd recognize if I could remember it.

It appears to me that as long as corporations can move their headquarters they will be able to use that threat to keep their taxes low (too low IMHO).

Of course, my knowledge is narrow. I'd be gratified to hear someone conversant in this subject broaden my narrow grasp.

You do bring up a good conversation about taxes, corporate mobility, and its consequences.

Texas lures companies away from New York and California because of tax breaks. The corporations like money, so they do that. The communities suffer because they don't get taxes to pay for roads and schools. But hey, fuck the poor, right? On the flip side, is the corporation supposed to not try and pay less taxes? Same with oversees labor.

I don't believe that.  Maybe a few offshore finance companies will work in Grand Cayman but Apple and GM aren't moving there, or to Mexico and anywhere else.

And frankly, fuck them if they do.

It is a pity that the GOP is so clownish and stupid on entitlement reform.  SS is not really that complex to bring into funding stability, but it will likely require raising/eliminating the tax cap, moving to chained CPI, and potentially monkeying around with the bend points to cut benefits to the wealthy.  Since Rick Scott walked into the room and publicly blew his dick off, there’s very little chance of a viable bipartisan reform that could deflect voters anger.

Is Joe using reverse psychology on the Repubs?  It seems like it would be easy.

They are conditioned to disagree with everything he says, so all he has to do is say they disagree with him, which is true, but then they will agree with him just to prove him wrong.

Back in the 1990’s there used to be all these poor saps who got suckered into towing this ridiculous line various think tanks cooked up that taxes on corporations weren’t just unfair, but also “double taxation” and that at any rate corporations didn’t pay taxes because they just got passed back into prices.

Now that’s all bullshit, and the point of view was so thoroughly discredited by real life that you don’t hear much of that in public anymore. But every once in a while someone who still believes it pops up their head like the YCT version of those Japanese holdouts on pacific Islands who never got the news that the war was over.

That’s the outcome regardless, the question is how deep the hole gets first. If we had done it soon enough we could have dropped the rate, but we’re beyond that point probably.
