We were favored to make the CFP, play for the SECCG and had the fucking Dr pepper commercial QB and main Madden QB.

Just because you like to be a revisionist doesn't mean anything you are saying is true.

Its great where we are and it is better than last year. I'm not picking weird shit.

If we are pre-season number 1 it will be hype like we have never seen before, mainly because we have never been pre-season number 1 before (I was kinda shocked by that).

I doubt they brought in Akina to overhaul the secondary schemes anyway. Bigger concern is the individual talent of guys stepping up to replace Barron and Mukuba.

It's more than just a question of the"individual talent" of the 2025 secondary... the way the 2024 unit played together was critical for their success.  Having 5 talented players in your secondary doesn't guarantee success if they don't play together, play their assignments and play intelligently.

Barron + Taaffe + Mukuba kept that secondary tight and in the right places/coverages -- gonna be interesting to see how well this year's secondary plays as a unit together.

I’m also worried about our offense. Last year we had all the experience across the board. This year we are young across the board  gonna be fun to see how sark dials it up

This team will average more pts per game than last season

You guys are arguing semantics. Who fucking cares? We were hyped last year and we're hyped this year too.

Enjoy the ride, the coverage and hype are gonna be bananas by the time week 1 in Columbus gets here.

Sir, I will not stand for antisemanticism.

Love the thread title. Here’s to Steve “Bum” Sarkisian getting the the sumbitch kicked all the way in. Luv ya Burnt Orange!

While I'm 100% Luv Ya Blue, I am 100% against riding with the Bum outcomes for this team.

But, yeah, kick the sumbitch in.

Definitely, but don’t undersell how much it will help to have QB run option, in terms of opening up holes for our backs. There will be added hesitation on every handoff to make sure Arch isn’t about to do a 70 yard dash.

I don't think run blocking is the worry.

Posted

I am pretty bullish on this secondary, but I expect our pass defense stats to dip a bit based solely on the fact that we are about to face a better group of QB's than we saw last year.

-Davis Warren pretending to play D1 football for Michigan

-Van Buren in his first career start for Miss State

-Hawkins who couldn't throw a forward pass for OU

-Florida's third stringer

-Brock Vandagriff for a half before Stoops yanked him

You would think one or two of Reed, Pavia or Green will take some steps forward as returning starters.

I also think we are going to see a lot of teams try to dink and dunk against our pass rush so we will need to try our best to avoid getting dragged into the mud by some of these teams who want to control time of possession and shorten games. We fell victim to that in a few second halves last year where it felt like we barely touched the ball (although some of that blame falls on our own offense).

Sark and Flood have traditionally been good at scheming things in the run game to where we were beating teams by alignment/numbers a handful of times a game. I'm going to guess those tricks may not work against the Georgias and Ohio States of the world, but they seem to work against a lot of the other defenses.

Even in the 2023 Bama game, we really didn't run the ball super well (92 yards in 29 attempts from the RBs). Same thing with Michigan last year (88 yards on 27 carries). The passing game drives the offense in the big games against the great defenses. That appears to be a feature and not a bug at this point and I would assume this year will be no different.

Personally, I don’t expect a repeat of the numbers from the defense.  We don’t really need that anyway.

Part of that is the under appreciated element of the hammered dogshit personnel that we went up against.  It’ll be improved - The Ohio State over Michigan.  OU certainly can’t be worse.  A&M should be improved.  UF won’t run out an Ivy League QB.  MSU likely won’t run out a QB for his first start.  Georgia will be a bit wait and see.  Per Phil Steeles experience chart, we get the top 6 in the SEC, which leaves Arkansas and Georgia outside that 6.  The draft results tell you one of two things regarding the offensive talent of our opponents, maybe both - it was weak or not draft eligible.  There’s a strong likelihood our opponents are far better equipped to create matchups that better suit them as compared to last year.  Better Olines, better QBs and probably better skill guys.

The hope would be an uptick in our pass rush covers for the back end when it’s off.  And don’t take that to mean I’m saying we won’t be damn good on the back end.

Personnel. We didn't really have maulers up front like they had at Bama.

Conner, and Majors were more effective at mirroring defenders than they were at driving DL backwards.

Hutson tries to play more physically, even if he isn't always effective at it. Neto is super physical, but he doesn't always know who to block and at what angle. Campbell hopefully goes nuts this year.

Either way, more physical guards and center this year. We'll see if it translates.

They won't do it, mainly because week 1 is defending national champs so they will give them the nod. Texas will likely be 2-3 on most.

The OL is the area I worry about the most. Failure at who to block and what angle on Sawyer on our final meaningful snap are burned into our collective retinas.

While we get ready for training camp, which begins on Wednesday, summer recruiting is close to being finished up prior to the start of the season.

As we’ve reported, two players might make their decisions in the next week - defensive back Davon Benjamin and defensive end Jake Kreul. Benjamin’s date is set for Aug. 2 while Kreul has not set anything in stone.

Given that, how and who is Texas is going to recruit beyond just the next week becomes the next question. And even more so, what is it going to take to reel in more elite prospects?

NIL will be a big piece of that. Of course, Chris Del Conte and his group is working to make the Longhorns the strongest NIL outfit in the country.

Time will tell what actually occurs, but there are some rumors that things are moving very much in the right direction.

**

Some folks questioned my recent report on the back-up quarterback battle.

So I checked back in on that comment.

I was told yet again yesterday evening that there will be a true battle for the back-up spot.

Trey Owens has a year and a half invested in Sark’s system, and therefore has a leg up in some ways. Yet I am told that Matthew Caldwell has gone through the summer and looked very capable at every step of the way.

Again, the back-up QB spot is going to be a battle. I think it’s truly 50-50.

Remember, there’s a reason Texas went to the portal in the first place in search of experienced depth at the position.

**

Another QB thought…

While I have zero doubt that Arch Manning is going to be a terrific quarterback at some stage of his career, we have to keep in mind that nearly all QBs have an implosion game in their first year as a starter.

Quinn had his at Oklahoma State. VY had his at home against Texas Tech. Colt actually had one or two as a sophomore.

If and/or exactly when Arch has his could determine whether the Horns make the playoffs or not in 2025.

I would counter that a QB that likes to throw downfield will open up the run game.

Fall Camp is 'Prove It' Time for a Number of Longhorns (Monday AM) - CJ Vogel

Spoiler

OTF Premium Fall Camp is 'Prove It' Time for a Number of Longhorns (Monday AM)

By CJ Vogel

Time to Prove It for Many Longhorns this Fall

OTF had the conversation in our group chat over the weekend that no matter the projected starting lineup we have in mind entering fall camp, things can always change.

Remember just a year ago, it was unknown where Jahdae Barron would start on the field for the Texas defense. He would eventually go on to win the Thorpe. As well as the WR rotation: Would it be Johntay Cook or Silas Bolden or even Matthew Golden who would step up and be that next big piece in the offense? Well, we all know how that worked out.

So the fluidity of camp is certainly top of mind for me as we begin hypothesizing the Texas rotations for the start of the season.

But I did want to go over some pieces on the Texas roster who are in prove it positions. For them to see the field as often as they would like in the fall, this is their chance to get into good graces with the Texas coaching staff.

***

Redshirt Freshman WR Aaron Butler

A no-brainer inclusion for me. The second year wide receiver is often a name thrown out by Texas fans as someone they have high hopes for. Well, as things stand now, there is work to be done to see the field in 2025. It was early enrollee Daylan McCutcheon who saw first team snaps over Butler in the spring and with the addition of Emmett Mosley V, the room has only increased its competition. So this fall camp is huge for Butler, otherwise, it may be another year of waiting to see the rotation.

Sophomore TE Spencer Shannon

The absence of Jordan Washington in the spring and the delayed arrival of Jack Endries allowed for Spencer Shannon to receive a lot of burn in the spring. But that tight end room has added many new bodies since April and now the competition for the field is at its highest. Shannon is the biggest tight end on roster, being listed at 6-foot-7 and his frame should be something that would benefit the Longhorns in 12 personnel settings. However, he will need to clear the efforts of Jordan Washington and even the immediate physicality of Nick Townsend for a consistent role on the field in 2025.

Daniel Cruz, Nate Kibble, Nick Brooks

I wanted to include all three offensive linemen for this one. Rarely do you see the starting five of the Texas offensive line change from the spring to the fall. It's actually only seen alterations under Steve Sarkisian due to the arrival of five-star Kelvin Banks and due to a season-ending injury for Junior Angilau. However, there are three guys chomping at the bit currently. Daniel Cruz backing up Cole Hutson. Nate Kibble at either guard position, mainly behind Neto Umeozulu. And Nick Brooks pushing heavily as OT3, with Brandon Baker in his sights.

Jordon Johnson-Rubell & Xavier Filsaime

Safety has been an interesting conversation this offseason. Texas feels great with its top-line guys – All-American Michael Taaffe, Jelani McDonald and the return of Derek Williams Jr. However, Steve Sarkisian has continuously mentioned the need for depth everywhere and safety is no different. Of course, the arrival of Jonah Williams is highly anticipated in the safety room, but those first cracks with the twos will go to JJR and Filsaime. Which of the two will emerge as that 4th safety in the group? My guess right now is Jordon Johnson-Rubell, but again, the point of this article is one of the two will have to prove that they are deserving during fall camp.

Redshirt Freshman EDGE Zina Umeozulu

Between the group of linebackers that can spin down to play off the end and the group of true freshmen expected to find the field at some point this fall, the EDGE room is loaded with talent. Though, we have heard some positives this summer regarding Zina Umeozulu who was fortunate to receive some first team burn in the spring before a thumb injury derailed his momentum. Umeozulu may have the most ideal pass rushing frame of anyone on roster at the moment (6–5, 262), but he will have to make the most of the opportunities presented this fall for ample play time to begin the season.

It's not like we are going to be less productive against Georgia or Ohio State in running the ball.

Seriously though I could see us give up a few more sacks due to an inexperienced offensive line and maybe Manning not being as quick through reads/progressions as Quinn due to his inexperience or Manning maybe being a little too aggressive looking for the deep ball.  But Manning's leg's and superior pocket presence should make up for some issues as well were Quinn ate a sack.

Regarding the back-up QB battle, there are no doubt multiple posters on this site who are grinding their teeth right now that Trey Owens isn't going to cut it.

I've given up trying to suss out the ins and outs of NIL going forward.  Any links to articles/posts that might lay out the current implications of the House settlement, the POTUS exec order, 3rd parties, etc. would be appreciated.
