I think pretty much the only thing that most of America actually agrees about currently is that we're tired of playing world police and sending our young men and women overseas to die.

And since no politician wants to be held responsible for $5 gas, there's pretty much nothing we can do.

It's really hard for me to care more about European security than the Europeans care about European security.  And if the Italians can't be bothered to stop selling Gucci tracksuits to mobsters, when why should Americans pay extra for gas?

After reading all of your in depth posts in the weeks leading up, I'm going to be really interested to read your analysis on the backend of this in the weeks that follow.  I.e., how do the Germany people reflect on their weak response, energy/military policies, etc. in the context of watching a full on Russian invasion of a European country I'm sure most didn't actually think would ever happen.

You think the Germans will reflect?  Ha--they'll take their spring vacation on the Bodensee or Sylt, drink some Bier, spank it to scheissporn on computers powered by Russian energy, and not worry a single lick about what the Slavs do to one another.

This is why a segment of the population were disgusted with NATO and other alliances and accords and wanted out or a more limited role; America ends up funding (in money, supplies, people, etc.) and paying the lion share because the rest of the body politic are, as you said, varying degrees of flacid.

Its like America always has to do 90% of the group project but everyone else who barely shows up or helps gets the A and thinks they are smart.

In this instance America is saying, someone else lead and y’all do the work, I’m going to sit back and either a) Europe doesn’t really care about Ukrainians and see them as others/Russians/outside of la familia or b) they are as spineless and financially compromised as we’ve always thought they were.

To me this is a black eye on globalism and shows you why you should have sovereignty built around your national strengths, so you have the autonomy and integrity to do what you want.

We voluntarily took on that role after WWII, and amped it up after the Cold War as the world's lone super power. It's why we have so much influence on world affairs. This type of stuff is what makes us the lone super power. I personally don't give a shit if we were to give that up, but understand that the consequences of this would make the US sphere of influence much less than it is today.

I was wondering what your take is on how intensely the reg's want to fight in this?  I know there's somewhat more anti-American sentiment with this in Russia (i.e. "the Americans ginned it up") but basically are these troops disciplined to take orders, period... or do they feel that this is a joke and Putin is sending them to die or get serverely injured for his own pockets.. etc. ?  We've had some brief speculation on here, but not sure if I've seen you or Ray's take on the will of the military (even the brass).  Just curious, thx.

I don’t believe even most of the Russian regulars want to be there and were fully prepared for what they are in and expected to do. As I mentioned- virtually no NCO culture.  Up to a few days before the invasion these jokers were uploading TikToks from their camps in Belarus while Russia’s official line was “exercises”. They were likely told it was exercises to the last minute.

On Chechens- unconfirmed reports that Kadyrov offered 5K per dead Ukrainian soldier.  These are also not regulars, neither are they ISIS or Islamic militants. They wear Rosgvardia national guard uniforms and are trained in a long history of North Caucasian insurgent-hunting and irregular tactics.  They’re nasty and they will commit atrocities, but important to be accurate about who they are.

I’m surprised Germany is such a limp dick. I’m not going to go into politics but relying on Russian energy and being pansy asses isn’t a good look on them, even worse they rely on US might to protect them. And they have a lot to lose here if Russia isn’t stopped at Ukraine. Just an odd acting country.

Well, it's a complacency.  For a long time, the world and Germans themselves were quite comfortable being militarily neutered.  They put their krauty little heads down and made stuff and made money.

In the meantime, the US assumed responsibility for their defense.

In the 70s and early 80s, it seemed they were kind of back in the swing of things militarily with the Leopard tank and the Tornado fighter.  And I think they even boosted their personnel "capacity" in the wake of Munich 1972.

Then the Soviets fell, East Germany was reintegrated, and the complacency set back in.

But it certainly looks craven at the moment.

I've worked for two European based companies, over the last 18 or so years.  The Krauts are, without question, the weirdos of Europe both in how they act and dress.  Skinny white jeans with brightly colored jelly shoes seem to be a go-to look.

german porn would validate those claims.

NATO: "go away, we're busy"

https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_191429.htm

On the 3rd February 2022, the International Military Staff (IMS) Gender Advisor, Lieutenant Colonel Katherine Prudhoe and staff hosted their first Deep Dive Session on Gender and Hybrid Threats at NATO HQ. The purpose of the session was to build awareness and spark discussion about how gender and hybrid threats affects NATO’s military planning.

The Deep Dive explored key factors of hybrid threats, how disinformation can be used to discredit and undermine, and can also be used to exploit existing social divisions such as those between men and women. Outi Jalonen highlighted key examples women politicians as the victim of misinformation campaigns. Dr. Hoogensen Gjørv explained that “diversity can be a vulnerability but also a strength” stressing the importance of looking through different lenses and to find new solutions to counter hybrid threats.

1/3 of Russia’s forces are currently in Ukraine if what BBC just said is accurate. Or I heard wrong. Hmmmm…invade Moscow? Just kidding.

1/3 of what they assembled on the borders is in Ukraine.  Russia can still escalate substantially. Kremlin tried to achieve maximalist aims without committing maximum firepower- likely result of a serious miscalculation in Ukrainian resolve and political will as well as a desire to avoid civilian casualties (which is tied to their miscalculation).

Putin can still escalate and bring much more to bear and likely will absent complete Ukrainian capitulation.

Well, the 135 has had a role in the past as an ELINT aircraft.

Might come in handy to fill a couple of "KC-135"s with the latest ELINT equipment and fly em around a war zone while telling everyone they're tankers.

Yup, I'm sure all of them have additional capabilities, but it's not something they'd really have to hide.  I'm sure Russia assumes/knows any US aircraft is snooping.

If Putin is going to rely on conscripts to salvage a fight, he's more delusional than even I have imagined.

Kris Boyd would be a better Russian soldier than probably 95 percent of conscripts.

Seems out of the blue.  Why is a US general giving this speech?  Is some US asset threatened that I don't know about?

There is a general perception that America is a country divided and China has upped its probing of Taiwan while vocally backing Putin.

From yesterday but there are Chechens also fighting for Ukraine:

Not the fact that they are Chechens, but rather how utterly inept even the most sophisticated armies are at occupations.  Now overly that they are using Chechens, and it's going to be a cluster fuck.
