Whether or not that conversation happened, I have no problem believing that there are Iranian-funded cells in the US right now.

I'm afraid we're gonna see something go boom domestically within days.

What? Right now there is no way for them to physically get one here.

IF there is ever a rogue state with a nuke I don't think they'd aim to hit US homeland, but rather a key strategic asset or base or force concentration that's deployed nearby, which gives them quite a bit more possibility space to confound planners.

It bears to keep in mind, if they have enough uranium to build a reactor they could just breed plutonium and skip the isotope separation phase alltogether. The science isn't a mystery - it's explained in detail in The Making of the Atomic Bomb.

I do also have a nagging feeling that we blew up an empty base - or at least a base that did not contain their nuclear material stockpile.

The sleeper cells bullshit is just another way to manufacture consent.

Consent? Republicans like Trump and Gaetz laugh at the thought.

I dont think they even need to.  The gulf states, China and India will bear down on Iran if they close the strait.  Their economies are incredibly tied to the strait and they aren't going to sit around watching.

Our 5th Fleet is right there.

If Iran tries to blockade the strait, that will end badly.  But the concern, per a military guy on the all-knowing TV, is that they can put mines in the strait and cause something awful that way, or at least render it unusable for some period of time.

Doesn’t take much to transport a few pounds of enriched uranium.  Stuff it in a barrel with some explosives and put it in the back of a van.  That’s what I’d be doing.

If you’re worried about a dirty bomb, there is plenty of non radioactive shit that will kill you just as dead and much easier to transport. The focus on dirty bombs is just buzz word nonsense. And, of course, targets in Israel would be easier and higher priority.

Right now is a time when it would be nice to have more allies than just Israel and El Salvador.

This ship is crashing before long. Not even 6 months into this garbage administration.

You are silly if you think that we don't have any allies or that Trump has run off any real support from Canada and Western Europe. He's an idiot and done a lot of damage in the short term, but I think most are understanding that in America tides turn every 4 years (or 2 years) and that in the long run it's a) smart to have the world's premiere power as an ally and b) on the longrun horizon things normalize.

After 9/11 we had real allies.
After what Bush and now Trump have done? We have allies in name only. Allies of convenience. Another major terrorist attack(s) hit the US and we'll see just how strong our relationships are now.
The West has been mostly quiet after the attacks with almost every ally just calling for diplomacy. US and Israel are going this one alone.
The bipolar nature of the US as a crumbling empire with a mostly uneducated, arrogant, and stupid population isn't lost on these countries. They know the US can't be trusted. They just can't economically afford to peel completely away. But there's no trust left, and all built up goodwill since 1945 is gone. They'll still speak the words, but watch the actions.

This. It takes a long time to disentangle. But the trust has been irrevocably destroyed. The process of separation has begun. Don’t mistake “it’s not done yet” for “it’s not happening.”

This reads like someone still in denial. Trump has destroyed the government and courts. America is cooked for at least a generation.

Exactly. It’s not even just Trump or the Republicans that those countries don’t trust. It’s us.

Trump is shit. That’s known. He’s been a colossal failure everywhere he’s been. He specifically was a shit president during his first term. That’s known. He should never have been elected again. In a country of rational, thinking people who actually pay attention to shit, he never would have even been nominated in 2016 and at the very least would have been primaried in 2020. But we don’t live in a country of rational, thinking people and it’s gotten to the point where it’s highly destructive.

This past November, he was reelected largely because of voter apathy, the fact that 1/3rd of the electorate seriously believes in this asshole, and above all, the sub-demographic of independent voters who thought they were so fucking smart when they uttered the fatal 5 words that election is always going to be known for: “but the price of bacon.”

Each person who said that shit is fundamentally untrustworthy. They are as trustworthy as MAGAts themselves.

There's a lot of discussion out there that the Iranians likely moved much of the weapons-grade enriched uranium from the sites due to Taco Tits' threats made on social media. Also, it appears they filled some of the entrances to the Fordow complex. I don't know the physics behind that but that is apparently done to lessen the effect of US bombs. Guess it's kind of like the stack on a smoker that draws the smoke/heat from the firebox, something like that. I dunno.

Still unconfirmed but pretty much confirmed by rumors of the initial reports is that Iran relcoted their nuclear material from these bunkers before the bombings. This, in my mind, makes the bombings a failed mission.

The only reason I initially liked this move was if it was a destruction of Iran's nuclear capabilities, but even if this bombing was a failure, there are still some things to like. Namely, the Iranian response appears like it's going to be a limited one based on intel and it's a good reminder to the rest of the world that America sees you when you're sleeping and can find you anywhere from the latest lethal autonomous vehicles to the stealth bombers carrying 40,000 lb payloads with tech from the 00's that is still relevant today.

Interesting to note the only countries to rebuke us for this are...checks notes... China, North Korea, Russia, Cuba and Venezuela. The rest of the world has either backed us publicly or said nothing at all.

I'm in the camp of if we are upsetting those misfits, then we are doing something right.

The nuclear materials itself weren't the problem.  At 60 percent enriched and you can't get it any higher no one cares.  The fact that the Iranians were getting to that high of a number and telling the world they weren't doing anything else with it is kind of curious though.  In the US by DOE rules, civilian nuke plants can only be less than 4 percent enriched.  Our submarines are like 85 or something but it's because the reactor core is the size of a small dumpster.  So the Iranians knew they were crossing some sort of line.  I don't blame them though.  I would get my hands on a nuke too.  I would steal one if I had too after this

Right, but the simplified timeline is:

- Iran was complying to treaty to keep them from enriching uranium at weapons grade levels

- Trump rips up treaty

- Iran enriches uranium at weapons grade levels

- Trump and everyone tells them to stop

- They don't

- Bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran

I get the relativist argument of "why can't Iran have the bomb and who are you to police that" but, like, that's not how the world works and it's naive at best to pretend that "might is right" is not still a thing.

I'll take this one.

Because Iran is a terrorist sponsor with a stated aim of destroying a sovereign nation.  They should never, ever be allowed to have a nuclear weapon.

And the fact that they have gotten this close is 100% at Donald Trump's feet.  He had to overturn as much of what Obama did as possible.  Didn't matter what or why.  So here we are, on the brink.

And of course the GOP is trying to give him credit for (maybe) cleaning up the shitpiles that he deposited all over the living room carpet.

I can't even wrap my mind around what an absolute clusterfuck this country has become in just five months.

I agree that he's begging the iranian nuclear question insomuch as the reason he's had to do this is because of what did previously did to tear up the previous treaty.

It's creating a solution for a problem you created and whether it's because of gross negligence and error or calculated political shrewdness and evil, the result is the same-- a pretty solid show of force against an American, Israeli and really "Western" enemy.

Yes it’s full of sound and fury, but what if it’s signifying nothing?  Meaning maybe they moved the material to safety prior to, and have lab setups elsewhere in which to continue their work, and still have or can obtain people capable of moving the program forward.

This is an absolutely absurd suggestion. The point of terrorism is that it is not tied to any official government. If the Iranian government even hinted that the next terrorist attack would be their responsibility it would be a direct act of war on US soil and would justify the leveling of Tehran. In ordinary times it could be NATO activation and Ayatollah Assahola possibly being Gaddafi’d up the poop shoot. Less than Zero chance this happened. I do fully expect some terrorism on US soil in the next few weeks.
