Donald Trump 2019

Trump peels back the facade in an interesting way.

When we killed ObL we stage-managed the rollout and had the classic photo in the situation room and a nice speech from a president who can sound dignified and noble. We had tones about the overwhelming importance of the event.

And it was all nonsense. We had probably known for a long time where he was holed up, watching porn and looking wistfully out the window. He probably wasn't doing anything or coordinating new schemes. But we presented the image and put up the front.

Trump can't do that. The killing of Baghdadi doesn't mean anything. It's a gross little exercise of power. It probably cost $50M to kill one gross idiot worth $20. But Trump can't sell it as something noble, with his clownshow rollout he is, in a way, more honest than Obama. It's an accident, of course, but there is far more emotional and metaphorical truth to Trump talking about Baghdadi running and crying like a dog than there is to Obama being admirable and presidential.

Yeah, I know that's a little thing.....but FFS, how pathetic of a fucking human being can you be?  You have a young son.  A WS game is being played where you live, you have a chance to attend.....and you don't bring your damned kid?

Seriously, I have turned DOWN (or requested a modification of) invitations to cool events because 1) it was something one of my kids would really love to be at, and 2) they weren't invited.  If President Brisket had a chance to go to a WS game, he'd damned well be taking Tito Cabrito with him.

Not that we need yet another reason in the cascade of reasons to conclude that he's a sociopath narcissist shitbag, but this one stands a bit alone and unique.  You go to a WS game in your hometown and you don't even bring your son.  There's literally no aspect of his life in which he is not an awful human being.  And the Repubs, the party of family values, FUCKING WORSHIP HIM.  Even Doc Holliday had a limit....

actually, the story is a lot more interesting. the midday guys on the horn had admiral mcraven on to interview, and while they were fairly certain that this "tall guy" was bin laden, mcraven still had to identify the body upon the return of the seals to afghanistan.

worth a listen: https://hornfm.com/2019/10/25/admiral-bill-mcraven-shares-sea-stories-with-trey-bk/

these dudes are kind of interesting and they usually stick to their bits, but they do some really great interviews.

yeah, also, maybe...barron didn't want to go? maybe he has an inkling of how much his dad is hated and would just rather not.

I don't think very many 12 YO boys like baseball if their Dads haven't made it a point to repeatedly expose them to the game.  Hell, my 15 YO son will play any sport you ask him to but getting him to a UT baseball game is only possible because he gets to eat crappy ballpark food.

Trump isn't a trusting guy, so you have to know that he's scared that GOP senators will use an impeachment trial to toss him out.

Being the untrustworthy type, how does Trump offset this potential loss of a trial?  Easy, get Pence to resign as VP.  Trump then gives the GOP senators an easy choice: Vote not guilty, or accept President Pelosi. Pence's resignation would raise the cost of convicting Trump.

The GOP senators would be pissed at Trump but what choice do they have at that point? And I don't if there's anything that would prevent Trump from re-nominating Pence immediately following the trial. Which he would then be reconfirmed by the Senate.

hm.... one one hand you have statements from the president, the admiral in charge, the few books written by the seals that were actually there, each statements from witnesses at every level involved with the event.  on the other hand, you have b_t telling us what probably happened based on his 25 years with the CIA and having run multiple assassination operations as a favored contractor of the mossad, the CIA, and the IRA.  i don't think we will ever know who is right.

For those of you that enjoyed the interview with McRaven, please read the book ("Sea Stories") that is referenced in the interview.  It is fascinating.  The Admiral is an absolute badass, and we should be proud that he is a Longhorn through and through.

What part of what I said are you actually taking umbrage at? That we knew where he was for a while?

It doesn't matter if we found out that minute or had already known for months. It doesn't change the reality that it was a farce. An extrajudicial killing of an international criminal by an special ops forced that crashed a $15M+ helicopter in the attempt. It's only impressive and inspirational if you've already internalized the the sales job and automatic gratitude and honor we are supposed to ascribe to every military action.

And you can buy all of that and enjoy that lens, but my point is that Trump puts a whole different lens on it. You have the generals sitting there with their uniforms and their medals and ribbons, all pomp and circumstance and gewgaws of our glorious American empire, and then next to them you have the putative leader of the free world sounding like an absolute fool and destroying the respectable image that has been the work of bipartisan jingoism for decades and decades.

The prevailing DC image of war is one of nobility and sacrifice, so much so that something as ugly and pathetic as the raid to kill OBL is sold like it was something grand and impressive. They wanted to do the same with Baghdadi, and Obama would have complied and provided the proper image, but Trump can't, and it's hilarious.

Holy fuck.  Here's an idea: power down your computer and read some books about what actually happened on the OBL raid.   Jeezus.

Edit: I see others got to your comment with the same basic idea before I did. Nevertheless, my comment stands.

Pence plays ball or he's off the 2020 ticket. Resign and then he can come back to the ticket to be VP again.

One thing that everyone needs to know about Trump is that he's like any other authoritarian leader, he doesn't care about the country or party. He will burn everything down on the way out. And everything and everyone around him should only be about one thing: protecting Trump. If you're not onboard with that, you're not onboard with the team.

Who's got the sweetest disposition?
One guess -- guess who!
Who never never starts an argument? (Woman: Hmmmm?)
Who never shows a bit of temperament?
Who's never wrong but always right? (Donald: Yeah?)
Who'd never dream of starting a fight? (Donald: That so?!)
Who gets stuck with all the bad luck?
No one... (Donald quacks angrily) but Donald Trump! (Donald: Yeah!)

Shut the fuck up Joe Scarborough. This coming from someone who was more than happy to give that dipshit all of the airtime he wanted during the campaign. He's the President, not the Dear Leader and the American public does not have to swear fealty to him.

People like Joe are the reason Teddy Roosevelt had to spell out the following.

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

People who think it ought to be, at the very least, socially unacceptable to criticize the POTUS ought to have to write that 100 times, or as many times as it takes the idea to get through their thick skulls. They also were notably silent when the man who they currently think deserves respect was regularly toting an outlandish, racist conspiracy theory against the previous president.

But the only reason for him resigning is if the senate turns on trump which would mean pence gets to be president. Being a lame duck president is still better than being vp for any number of years.

if it came to Pence refusing to resign, then Pence is gambling that the Senate will vote to convict, and he would be leading the charge. And if came down to that, the GOP would be fractured beyond imagination. Every Republican would be required to publicly take sides.

First I'd like to say, fuck you Chris Coons.

Now on to my post...

National security officials say Trump revealed secret US tactics by describing the raid that killed ISIS leader al-Baghdadi, possibly compromising future operations

Because, of course...this idiot can't be trusted with any sensitive information.

  Hide contents

In a press briefing broadcast live on Sunday, US President Donald Trump described in granular terms the raid in which US special forces killed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State terrorist group.

"When we landed with eight helicopters, a large crew of brilliant fighters ran out of those helicopters and blew holes into the side of the building, not wanting to go through the main door because that was booby-trapped," Trump said.

But according to current and former military and national security experts who spoke with the media in the wake of the raid, the gripping, public details — down to precise timings and specific tactics — could come back to haunt the US in future raids.

Trump relished describing al-Baghdadi as "whimpering and crying and screaming all the way" before his death, having been pursued into a network of subterranean tunnels by the US forces before detonating a suicide vest.

The president said that US forces had a detailed knowledge of the tunnel network and that his perspective following the raid from the White House Situation Room was "like watching a movie."

Trump mapped out part of the dangerous route taken by the airborne special forces to the terrorist's hideout in northwestern Syria. He said the aircraft traveled "very low and very fast," took an hour and 10 minutes, crossed territory held by Russia, and encountered enemy fire. The team, he said, took the "identical route" back.

Some national security officials have expressed concern that Trump's vivid description of the raid may have revealed too much — handing terrorists targeted by the US valuable information on evading capture or death.

Michael Leiter, who was director of the US National Counterterrorism Center when Osama bin Laden was killed by US special operations forces in 2011, discussed the issue with Vox on Sunday.

"Talking about how many aircraft, where the aircraft are flying in, how they're breaching a building, other technology they can bring to bear, knowledge about the tunnels and the mapping of those tunnels, these are operational details which are only about preening," Leiter said.

And speaking with Politico, current and former military officials and special operations commanders questioned the commander-in-chief's decision to describe details of the raid.

They said the president provided clues on how al-Baghdadi was located, specific details on the network of tunnels into which he fled, and information about how they accessed the building.

They questioned why he revealed that US special forces took time after the assassination gathering intelligence, ultimately staying at the site for two hours.

"There's no reason to reveal that," a former special operations commander told the publication.

"You're giving them another way to think about how long forces on the ground are vulnerable. Timing on an objective is something where you never want the bad guys to know what your procedure was or how long it took."

Trump has faced criticism in the past for disclosing highly sensitive information on military and intelligence operations. In August he tweeted a highly detailed picture of an Iranian rocket-launch site that experts said had most likely been included in his classified intelligence briefing.

The theatrical manner of Trump's announcement of al-Baghdadi's death differed from the measured announcement of bin Laden's death delivered by President Barack Obama in 2011.

But the criticisms they received in the wake of the announcements haven't been so different. Obama administration officials were censured by some at the time as revealing too much about the raid on the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Peter King, then chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, called for an inquiry to be launched after it was revealed that Obama administration officials had briefed the film director Kathryn Bigelow for her film "Zero Dark Thirty" about the hunt for bin Laden.

There will always be a tension between a president's desire to gain political credit for a successful, high-profile operation and the desire of US military forces to cloak such operations in secrecy.

And some officials defended Trump, saying he was in fact deliberately vague about operational details that could compromise future raids.

"There's always a risk in saying too much," Robert Spalding, an Air Force general who served on Trump's National Security Council, told The Washington Post.

"But the thing I liked was, there were no pictures, there was no specification of types of aircraft used. Everything I saw in terms of what was released was quite vague."

The theatrical manner of Trump's announcement of al-Baghdadi's death differed from the measured announcement of bin Laden's death delivered by President Barack Obama in 2011.

The author forgot to mention that once time Obama put his feet up on the desk in the oval office.
