If you are very rich I’m sure it’s still great because you never see real life….  You don’t walk the streets full of human shit, it’s definitely much worse than it was 20 years ago from my experience.  I use to live north of SF and spent a lot of time there for work and it has definitely gone down hill drastically since.   This is the city that can’t clean itself up but wants to pay a million per person reparations?  While the state is broke?   Non of this makes sense.

Unless you are in a few areas (which I agree have absolutely gone downhill) views like that are your daily life and why you pay to be here, and frankly if you commute in from Marin to the Financial District for work you’re not in a position to comment on the quality of life in the other 48 square miles of the city. I’ll be the first to comment on the city’s dysfunction, but I’d push back on the notion that this homicide is reflective of anything and is mainly notable because of what an aberration it is. Shit like this happens in Oakland all the time.

State broke?  California had a 22 billion dollar deficit that Newsum admits to, it worse. I mean you are basically saying if you are rich you don’t have to deal with issues or see them everyday?  I guarantee most don’t have views like that, I’ve been in yards that have views like that, that’s not a common ever day view.  You are basically saying yes I don’t know about anything the common folk deal with?  Lol.  I’m not arguing for the common SF people but I don’t think you have a dog in this fight.

I will not agree that it's a shithole, but I will say this:  when I was there around 2005, there was a passed out man laid out on Market Street, with a long string of yellow crime scene tape sticking out of his exposed ass.  We all just walked over him like he was a log.  Even in his passed out condition, you could tell that he was schizophrenic.  I can only imagine what it's like today.

Here's the DA:

"We do not tolerate these horrific acts of violence in San Francisco," Jenkins said.

Also saw that the combined property and violent crime rate in SF is higher than 98% of the US. Despite the real estate being, the #1 most expensive?

You're either policing it, or allowing it to happen.

paraphrasing Mike Leach.

Counterpoint: San Jose is worse. I’ve never seen anyone shoot up or smoke crack in SF, since we are sharing personal anecdotes, but I’ve seen it twice in SJ. Once as I walked passed an alley (middle of the afternoon) and once at a bus/rail stop in the early evening still light out.

Hoover Institution is suspect as a source. I think this was a freak tragedy, but it could just as easily have happened in Houston.

In Houston we just have rappers getting gunned down in River Oaks.

Counterpoint: Los Gatos which borders San Jose is nice as shit. And I lived in Capitola which is only 17 miles away and was very nice when I was there.

17 miles or 3 hour drive

Truth. One of the reasons that I left is I was working at a biotech company in Fremont and living in Capitola and they wanted me in the office until 7:00. That hour and a half (min.) commute got very old.

FIL lives in Los Gatos, and it is indeed nice as shit. Tech bros will eventually ruin it too.

I just got back from SF. Was there for the first part of spring break with family.

Riding the bus down Market to the Wharf and I saw someone shoot up with a needle for the first time.

Then at the next bus stop I saw someone smoking off of foil for the first time.

Good times. Love what they’ve done to the place.

That’s like my last experience at a huge convention. Perfectly fine near all the conference centers like Yerba Buena, Moscone, etc, but I wandered off a bit from the crowds looking for a decent place to grab a drink…not recommended. Maybe two blocks, and you’re dodging enormous piles of human shit on the sidewalks (which frankly surprised me since I kind of assumed homeless folks don’t eat all that much and would therefore have smaller poops, but that was clearly not the case) and needles everywhere. Fucking surreal. Noped the hell out of there post haste.

In some areas the city hoses off the streets nightly because it's so bad.

Friends said he had recently moved to Miami because SF had deteriorated so badly and continued to do so. Was apparently in town just to clean a few work items up.
I read that he recently sold his house in Mill Valley and moved to Miami. He didn't even live in San Francisco.

i've seen that twice in Austin, once in Honolulu, and this past weekend in downtown Denver. it's basically a big city problem everywhere.

There's a video of him bleeding running up to people asking for help.

I feel bad for the guy's family but I don't think I'd get involved either. Some bleeding guy coming up on me at 2:30 AM, especially in SF? I'm noping out of there.

I'm kinda starting to obsess on this case.

So rich dude leaves the Bay Area because San Francisco, where he doesn't even live, is deteriorating with crime - but he comes back, books a room downtown, and feels safe enough to wander the streets alone at 2:30am, half a mile away from his 5 star hotel?

Nobody's come forward to say they were at a late meeting/dinner/drinks with him? There are no bars or restaurants to speak of down there. The Giants stadium is not far, but they were out of town.

Maybe he had insomnia and went for a walk, but not along the beautiful waterfront across the street from his hotel?

The streets in that area are quiet at night. It's a well-heeled, safe neighborhood of recently built high rises where the residents park undergound and street parking is plentiful after 6pm. I live in a much higher traffic, older neighborhood and have never felt unsafe - even at 2:30am.

It could be a random act w a stranger he encountered. He was stabbed twice in the chest and his phone and wallet were on him after he was found

There's gotta be video of him leaving his hotel prior, and I'm sure more from other buildings in that area.

Something is off here, I think. Curious to see how this unfolds.

I work a few blocks away and walked by the murder scene this afternoon. It’s around the corner from Red’s Java House, under the Bay Bridge. There’s typical fidi sketchiness there (two screaming schizos in the street at 2 pm) but it’s certainly not Hunters Point or Vis Valley. That area is dead at night and totally agree if he were out at some nearby late night bar (are there any?) we should know by now where he was. Rough crowds will come over from the east bay and run side shows on Embarcadero sometimes so they can bolt when SFPD shows up - maybe he got mugged and fought back?

Or maybe he was doing stuff a married man isn't supposed to do and shit went south.

Who knows.

Nothing good ever happens after 2AM, especially when you have a wife and kids at home.

Likely story is he saw a high end escort and was walking back.  She’ll never come forward for obvious reasons.
