On a personal level, my parents just fucked around and found out. The continued support of an obvious racist is just too much, even if they aren't openly espousing those views in front of me. I don't want my mixed-race kids around them until they do some serious soul-searching, and I told them as much.

It fucking sucks, but pretending everything was ok and ignoring the state of the world when they were around was not going to be sustainable.

This is happening a lot across the country and you're doing the right thing.  These fucking Trumptards will say 'it's just political differences' while supporting (or outright saying) vile, nasty, horrible things all over the place.  Their brains are broken and they think this shit is somehow normal and OK because the only media they consume is right wing media that tells them they are right.

I'm low contact with my parents already but it won't take much more out of either one of them for me to permanently cut them off.

Not to sound morbid, but to anyone on this thread going through some version of this, how have they reacted? Like, in the moment?

"This person should be forced to rent to me despite disagreeing with my worldview" sounds like some forced DEI bullshit to me. I thought our new laws didn't legally support forced inclusion?

Also, I'd love to know of an instance for responding to a question with "depends" ever resulted in positive results or impressions.

Well in my case, my parents are in the valley for a while, although they normally live half an hour away. So this all took place over email so I could compose and organize my thoughts, with citations.

My father responded that he gave money to a candidate for the first time in his life to Haley and voted for her in the primary. He also put on his Anastasis hat and said he hated the far right as much as the far left, and that we need to have faith that our checks and balances will prevails.

I'm sure my mother is still crying.

If that was me in the situation, reading that hand waving away response, my resolve would just strengthen.

Thanks for sharing.

Lotta long car trips/bus rides in Joe Biggs future I suppose. Wonder if he thinks it was worth it?

The wife of a guy I work with has a pretty high job with USAID. She only has to go into the office a few times a month, which is good because they live about 2 1/2 hours from the office.  Even though she teleworks most of the month, she gets DC locality pay. She's been put on admin leave.  If she keeps her position, she's been told that she will have to be in the office 5 days a week.  They are both apparently pretty upset and don't know what they are going to do.  Not sure how she voted, but I found out today that he voted for Trump.

She will be fine. She will get a job with a Beltway consortium, become a lobbyist, and basically do fuck all.

Hopefully it's from violent retching and bloody flux.

Is the Dearborn Caucus the dumbest and most gullible voting bloc in America?  I know that's a very high bar to clear but are they?

Yes. They are an insanely dumb lot of people. I think that they should be shipped to Gaza and the families that have been displaced by this war should get to take their place.

Two days out from being 3 months since this thread was started and 103 104 pages thus far. What a mad mad mad world.

Also: I noticed that Jared Kushner had commented on the development of Gaza over a year ago (since of course he's a real estate guy) and so nothing to see here, nothing to see....

What I would like to know for every undocumented person or revoked documented person arrested and sent out of the country, how many legal (voting)family members remain?

I would assume that having your spouse or parent or grandparent or close neighbor arrested and removed is going to be a major motivator in future elections.    I would love to know how many people this affects. Many of these cultures have familial relationships that are larger and those relationships closer and more intertwined than how we view our nuclear families.
