Of course all of that. Somebody told him something though and he latched onto it. What was it?

His first bit of analysis here was that before income taxes, tariffs were a or the primary revenue source of the US Government.  So, more tariffs = no income tax.

Someone else told him that tariffs can also be used to incent domestic purchasing and manufacture.

That's about all the analysis he's ever done.

My theory:

Trump does not buy stuff.  Most of our leaders don't.  If they want a hamburger they ask an aide and a hamburger appears.
Trump does know what he thinks his net worth is, and higher is better.

So, to Trump, having more money is the goal since he does nothing to get the stuff he actually uses.  Rounds of golf, transportation on a private 747, food, clothing, shelter.  He gets what he wants not by trading money for goods, but by asking someone else to make them appear.  If the person fails to make the goods appear, they are fired, which he enjoys doing, and he has a person that will make a new person appear who will attempt to make the goods he wants appear. And if they don't, he will fire them too, which he enjoys doing.

Along with many of our leaders, he is disconnected from the experience of the average American.

Yep.  And when it comes to actually spending money, like on one of his projects, he seems to be a colossal cheapskate, even though it's not his money.

No or less spending means Trump richer.  No consideration whatsoever for what the spending purchases or its value.  If he's spending, it means someone's getting over on him.  The zero-sum, transactional nature of that fucking guy.

That's why he loves licensing his name more than anything else.  He doesn't come out of pocket at all.

I find it mind bottling how many bullshit statements by Trump and his minions (taken at their word as true) will be enough to pull up the market.

I mean, Trump was quoted saying, “80% tariff sounds about right”.    In what fucking world is most every Chinese made good being 80% more expensive a benefit to American families or our economy?  TEMU should have a tariff add-on to the spin wheel.   And yet, the markets will probably joyously react that it’s not 140%.  So bizarre.

I can't prove it, obviously, but Trump I's USTR, Robert Lighthizer, had been a GOP trade guy for a long time.  Although he is by reputation a trade hawk, it seems he kept Navarro and some of Trump's worst instincts tamped down, like a lot of people in Trump I.

This guy was Lighthizer's number 2, which I guess means isn't the same guy but maybe close.  Fairly obviously, he didn't have Navarro and Trump tamped down.  He looks pretty young/junior to me.

Although I'm pretty sure I hate Bessent, the fact that he and this guy seem to be dominating the discussion these days may be a positive sign for the rationals.

That's one of the best posts I've ever seen from Empty wheel, though.  The clips of the legal briefs show that review of a president's declaration of emergency for tariff purposes may be unreviewable.

Congress needs to get off its ass and take back tariff power ASAP.

I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief that everything we buy from China is now only 30% more expensive.   Thank God, Bezos and Elmo won’t have to pay those crippling taxes anymore.

30% is still an insane trade war started for no reason other than the president failing high school economics  Everyone acting like tariffs are gone is driving me insane

Eventually, a trade "deal" with china will be reached. Will it be "better" than before? Who the fuck knows. But what will happen is that in the meantime, lots of businesses will go out of business, lots of people will be laid off, and it will take a long time before the rest of the world trusts us again, if they ever do.

But oligarchs will get richer. DoTARd thinks he is an oligarch.

Tariffs have still increased, meaning the average citizen will pay more... but they have not increased enough 1) for any company to move manufacturing stateside or 2) to eliminate income taxes.

So, all of the downside without any of the (admittedly bullshit) upside.  ART OF THE DEAL!

An increase however small is not good, but regardless of how you think this gets to an endgame, 145% tariffs were gonna fucking blow shit up in a way no one was really prepared for.

People have short memories. A "trade deal" was reached in his first tenure, which lead to.....wait for it....increased costs and prices and didn't do shit for manufacturing in the US.

Trump is a rapist, felon, grifter fucking idiot who peddles his bullshit to his dipshit base who only know the lies they are feed in his bullshit tweets. America is fucking stupid.

100%, but we shouldn't give him credit for taking steps to fight the fire he started... especially when there's still a fucking fire happening.

So it drops to 30% or whatever fucking number. Now he's being lauded for partly dousing a raging fire that he delibertately set.

His dipshit base will sing his praises for being the fireman but conveniently forget that he was the fucking arson.

This.

Will tariff revenues be large enough to meaningfully offset income taxes?  NOPE.

Will tariffs be high enough to truly force companies to move meaningful volumes of manufacturing back to the US?   NOPE.

Will tariffs be high enough that John and Jane consumer will see additional price inflation on countless goods they offer, likely in the range of 10-30%, when we were told that 8% inflation at the height of the supply chain crisis was "the worst thing ever?"  YEP.

Nothing but losing, as far as the eye can see.

So what about all the supposed money that’s been pouring in due to the massive tariffs? According to Leader Dotard anyway. Why does he want to put a stop to that?
