I had a leak under my driveway. Driveway is paved, 40 yards long  and bid $5000 to repair leak. I told them to fuck off and bid went to $1000. My neighbor said he got a bid for a 30X10 basic deck and the contractor wanted $60k.  He was  willing to pay it. I told him he was a retard and the reason why basic repairs and additions  were so expensive is because rich people don't check the poors that are stealing. Ended up paying 5K.  I explained that the GC and all of the contractors were probably meth addicts He priced around and got it done for $5K. Ive been an an attorney for 20 years. People in construction are the most drug addled, dishonest pieces of shit.  No industry even comes close. Its pathhetic. All on meth or have meth brain.

Could say the same shit about lawyers, just with higher tier drugs.

I never got my wisdom teeth taken out. One came in fully, but it didn't fuck up my other teeth, and they never hurt, so I never took them out. Every dentist I've ever been to tells me that I urgently need to get them removed (and they just so happen to know a guy who will give me a great deal) as soon as possible. I tell them I've been told that for 30 years now and the speech is beginning to lost its impact.

I'm dishonest. I sometimes tell my wife I'm working a bit later on Friday when I'm actually chilling with my coworkers.

But we're drinking whisky, not doing meth.

Over Christmas break a few years ago, I had a root canal go bad and had a scheduled visit with an endodontist the week after the break to try to redo it and save the tooth. Well, the week wore on and my antibiotics script ran out and my dentist's office was closed, so I visited a chain dental place that happened to be open to see if they could renew my antibiotics for the week. The dentist there told me that going to the endodontist was a waste of time and that she could pull the tooth now and start the implant process for the low low cost of $5,000.

I declined and after some pressure they gave me the antibiotic and sure enough the endodontist, a former Army dentist, fixed it right up in like an hour for a $50 copay.

Health Insurance/Dental Insurance.   On the later, I broke a tooth and had a crown done.  The insurance carrier reviewed and denied the claim stating their independent dentist who reviewed my case believed I should have had a crown put in.  My dentist submitted it again and again they denied it again stating the procedure that was performed should be the procedure.  I am so happy they found an illiterate independent dentist to review the claim.

Having worked as a utility contractor and in construction, I can say that without a doubt it is the most toxic professional culture one can find in a ‘reputable’ industry. I know that’s a big asterisk. But it’s filled with narcissists, sociopaths, drunks, drug addicts, criminals, and crooks…. And that’s just the C suite. As you flow down the org chart you find all the same things but it’s harder to find someone embodying all those at the same time like you do at the top.

However, I’ve also met some of the most honest, hard working people in my life in this industry as well.

Even with all the measures that are supposed to keep it honest, there is so much financial fuckery that is played it’s no wonder you find so many super flawed humans ‘succeeding’ at it…..But it is also some of the most honest and rewarding work one can do in that it has a real tangible benefit to the world, people, and communities. Unlike say finance, consulting, pharmacy benefit managers, etc.

It occupies all states at once in an occupational superposition.

I didn't mean to paint everyone with that brush.  I am sure they're great people in the industry.

This so much.

But also, the tetrad of insurance, provider, pharmacy benefit manager, and pharmacy.

Try and shop healthcare. I dare you.
Try to find the cheapest place to buy a drug that isn’t for blood pressure, cholesterol, an SSRI, hair loss, or a wonky dick. If Mark Cuban ain’t selling it. Good Effin’ luck.

Daughter needs ADHD meds…. Or so the wife says. Idk. But whatever.

Ive got a high deductible HSA. So I have to shop. No problem I think. Costco prices are badass usually.

Attempt 1.) With insurance- $300. Yeah fuck no.

Attempt 2.) Costco and Costco discount price - $79…. Ok whatever I’ll pay that know and find something cheaper later. I’m cheap and I’m kind of irritated so here we go:

My Journey:
1.) Call insurance for prices around town. They can’t give it. Huh? Why not? Diff pharmacies / diff manufacturers all diff. Only can give a ‘estimate’. Is that the real price? Is it close? All they can say is it’s an estimate and they can’t even say if it’s good for the today or if it’s within 10%. Total useless BS. Told to Call the pharmacies. They should help me look up prices.

2.) Call pharmacies. They can’t. They need a script. Huh? Just look it up right? Nope. Can’t. Have to have a script. Don’t want to even try to run it through insurance. Why not? Because they could be investigated by the insurance for … get this…. Fraud. Why would the insurance company tell me to ask you to commit fraud? Pharmacy says tough titty. Go away and talk to your doctor. Huh? Have your doctor write the scripts to the medicine you want us to look up the price for then we can do it. Now go away.

3.) call doctor. We aren’t writing you 5 scripts for a controlled substance. Nice try buddy. Me: I need to shop it. Doc says to call insurance. 🤦‍♂️ I explain the whole story. Doc is on board. Doc: So which pills did you want me to write a script for? Me: uhhh. All the kinds just like hers? Him: well IDK all the kinds. I just write usually for that one. Me: let me ask Chat gpt. Yep. That happened. Calls in the scripts.Hurray!

4.) Call back to Costco. So how much are they? Costco: we don’t have any of those meds in stock. Me: NP. She’s got a months supply anyway. But how much if they were so I can tell my doc which is the cheapest. Costco: we can’t say. Me: what? Why?
Costco: it’s out of stock so we don’t have a price.

Me: But what WAS the price.
Costco: there’s no way to know sir.

Have you tried GoodRx? Works for us for almost everything generic. If it’s not offered in generic and the pharma company doesn’t give samples and coupons you’re probably fucked

Also, with the advent of YouTube, there are videos out there for a majority of the basic-to-intermediate repairs which are the high margin (read: easy) work that service technicians used for a good portfolio mix with the harder, more complex, lower margin work.

I just saw this firsthand had to replace a basic part/appliance which felt very basic and straightforward, got quotes which were all very high for 30 minutes worth of work if you do it all day. Granted it took me 90 minutes while watching two Youtube videos and taking a couple of breaks to watch college football since I basically did the work during commercials.

I never intended to practice law for an occupation but in 1981 I was faced with a decision: go to law school or dig ditches for a living.  I said to my dear bride, Mrs. Llama, “But there’s a lawyer on every street corner and we’ve never known a good one.”
She said, “Law school is three years.  Med school is six years, and a lot longer before you’re earning any significant money.  Tell me, big guy, if you don’t ho to law school, where will we be three years from now?”

I went.  I discovered that if I pronounced my clients’ names correctly, showed up on time for appointments, and was honest, I would never hurt for clients

I don’t think of myself as a lawyer but I do practice law as an occupation. I’ve never scammed anyone but I have bern scammed by vendors of equipment, supplies, and phone/internet/email services.

And 100% of those coupons don’t work for us olds on Medicare Part D.  Also, the rise of high tech/recombinant drugs makes many choices simply astronomically expensive (may not really apply to your specialty.)

Yep. There was someone who wanted to let Medicare negotiate prices with pharma. Don’t know if allowing coupons to be used with part D would have been part of that but would make sense 🤷‍♂️

Window Salesmen:  Renewal by Andersen quotes a quarter of the value of your house for window replacement (I think we got quoted 3700 / window) and their sales tactics are more aggressive than a used car salesman.  What they do is not terribly difficult, but most of the big box stores won't sell drop-in replacement windows for standard sizes, so even Lowes / Home Depot get you by the short and curlies trying to force custom orders and install fees.

HVAC techs.  Granted, when you're paying $400 for a capacitor replacement, you're paying $20 for the part, $100 for the diag and labor, and $280 for not having to drive to the HVAC supplier and waste half a day to get said part and do it yourself.  My number 1 complaint about HVAC is the suppliers seem to be open from 10a to 3pm M-F, and you usually find out your crap's broken on a Friday afternoon at 4pm.  Either pay the tech fees to get it fixed in a few hours, or sweat out the weekend and hope you can get to the parts depot first thing Monday.

Plumbing, well, you pay the premium for the tools, experience, and most importantly WARRANTY.  The barrier to entry to do PEX is a big enough step to keep most plumbers in business.

Or keep a spare $20 capacitor for when you need it.  I say this, but I don’t have one. I should take my own advice.

Ding, ding, ding!   Winner Winner.

I own a service company.   AC, plumbing and electrical.  You just nailed our value proposition.

PE has ruined so many of these companies.  But, it's created opportunities for companies like mine.  They buy AC equipment for 30-40% less than me and sell it for 50% higher than me.  And spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in advertising annually.  They literally build their model around taking advantage of people and moving on to the next one.  It's a numbers game for them.  They'd rather gouge a customer once than take care of them for years.  I just refuse to do that.  We can charge a fair price, build a loyal customer base, and pay our people well without being held hostage by the PE overlords.

Buried somewhere in our reviews from a few years ago was the perfect example of how these sheisters operate.

Customer had big PE-backed company install a new AC unit in the fall.  The next summer, they notice their master bedroom isn't cooling off.  They call the same company back out to look at it.  That company tells them, "It's Austin and it's summer.  You need more insulation!  Here's a quote for $25,000."  They decide to get a second opinion and call another big PE-backed company.  Their "tech" (and I use that term loosely) tells them "The unit that the first company installed was the wrong unit.  Here's a quote for $15,000 for the RIGHT unit.  That'll fix you right up!".  They call us.  We go into the attic to discover that the supply duct feeding the master bedroom was never connected to the plenum after the unit was changed out the previous year.  We reattach the duct, charge the $250 service fee, and now we have a customer for life.  Swapped out their other unit the following year and did it for under $10,000 (though prices have gone up a ton since then).

Pretty much same thing happened to me, but we really did need ours replaced. Found a local company who I could talk to the owner. Alot cheaper with a much better service
