AUSTIN, Texas — A Buda man has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after allegedly torturing and killing dogs in Austin hotel rooms.

According to an affidavit, 27-year-old Tyler Hastings Berry is facing third-degree felony charges after a dead pit bill mix was discovered in his hotel room at the Doubletree Suites at 303 W. 15th St. on June 28, 2021.

The affidavit said the dog was found by the cleaning crew a day after Berry checked out, along with numerous hypodermic needles and drug paraphernalia.

A veterinarian with the Austin Animal Center determined the dog may have been strangled or partially drowned around 24 to 48 hours before its death.

“During those 24-48 hours, the dog would have been slowly dying and experiencing an unimaginable amount of pain and suffering, until its eventual death,” the document said.

Police recognized Berry’s name from another incident on June 5, when a wet, dead puppy was allegedly found in his room after he checked out from a different hotel. No officer was dispatched to that incident and no charges were filed because the puppy’s body was thrown away by hotel staff, the affidavit said.

Berry does face charges, however, over a third incident on Aug. 2 in which two dead puppies were found at another hotel in northwest Austin where he stayed. An investigation showed those puppies died from a lack of medical care.

The affidavit said Berry was arrested on Aug. 8 when he returned to the Doubletree Suites for another stay. His girlfriend, who was with him at the time, reportedly told officers Berry would get dogs off Facebook, “but then they would disappear.”

“Berry told her that he gave them away or that they ran away, but that his stories about the dogs was always ‘fuzzy,’” police said.

Gotta figure this dude's dog killings were a waypoint to bigger things eventually, too.

Get a rope.

Macdonald triad

The Macdonald triad (also known as the triad of sociopathy or the homicidal triad) is a set of three factors, the presence of any two of which are considered to be predictive of, or associated with, violent tendencies, particularly with relation to serial offenses. The triad was first proposed by psychiatrist J. M. Macdonald in "The Threat to Kill", a 1963 article in the American Journal of Psychiatry.[1] Small-scale studies conducted by psychiatrists Daniel Hellman and Nathan Blackman, and then FBI agents John E. Douglas and Robert K. Ressler along with Ann Burgess, claimed substantial evidence for the association of these childhood patterns with later predatory behavior.[2] Although it remains an influential and widely taught hypothesis, subsequent research has generally not validated this line of thinking.[3][4]

The triad links cruelty to animals, obsession with fire-setting, and persistent bedwetting past a certain age, to violent behaviors, particularly homicidal behavior and sexually predatory behavior.[5] However, other studies claim to have not found statistically significant links between the triad and violent offenders.

Further studies have suggested that these behaviors are actually more linked to childhood experience of parental neglect, brutality, or abuse. Some argue this in turn results in "homicidal proneness".[6] The "triad" concept as a particular combination of behaviors linked to violence may not have any particular validity – it has been called an urban legend.[7]

According to Douglas and his fellow researchers however, the triad behaviors are not causal when examining a relationship with later predatory behavior, but rather, are predictive of an increased likelihood of future behavior patterns, and give professionals a chance to halt some patterns before they progress.

In Singer and Hensley (2004), arson, or fire-setting, is theorized to be a less severe or first shot at releasing aggression. Extensive periods of humiliation have been found to be present in the childhoods of several adult serial killers. These repetitive episodes of humiliation can lead to feelings of frustration and anger, which need to somehow be released in order to return to a normal state of self-worth.[5] However, the triad combination has been questioned in this regard also, and a review has suggested that this behavior is just one that can occur in the context of childhood antisocial behavior and isn't necessarily predictive of later violence.[8]

Cruelty to animals[edit]

FBI special agent Alan Brantly believed that some offenders kill animals as a rehearsal for killing human victims.[9] Cruelty to animals is mainly used to vent frustration and anger the same way firesetting is. Extensive amounts of humiliation were also found in the childhoods of children who engaged in acts of cruelty to animals. During childhood, serial killers could not retaliate toward those who caused them humiliation, so they chose animals because they were viewed as weak and vulnerable. Future victim selection is already in the process at a young age. Studies have found that those who engaged in childhood acts of cruelty to animals used the same method of killing on their human victims as they did on their animal victims.[10]

Dog attacks will draw some diverse opinions.  I’m not under the impression that these dogs attacked anyone.

Me, either, but a lot of folks here have the opinion that pits were created by the unholy union of Satan and Vladimir Putin.

I would never have one, but a cousin did, and my sister would not allow that dog around her kids when they were really young.  Said cousin just got out of prison, so that’s probably more of a comment about him than the dog.

This guy was prepping his brain for some serial killer action. Except most serial killers are actually smart to a degree. This guy was a dumbfuck and it thankfully got him caught before he killed a human.

He will be out soon enough, and will level up.
The punishment for animal abuse isn’t going to stop him for long, and you can’t convict him of murder(s) he hasn’t yet committed.

It’s almost like there might be a middle ground between “a combo pitbull ranch and daycare sounds good” and “let’s torture and murder pitbull puppies in a Super 8 bathtub.”

Waiting for the "Kill all pit bulls" crowd to enter the chat and declare this piece of shit a saint.

I'm waiting for all the dull puns that flower in threads about terrible things happening to people. What happened to the pride in callousness?

Don't get me wrong, just about any remark that's actually funny is justified. Puns generally aren't funny unless you're British.
