Damn it. I really wish they had finally had Vera come into the bar to get Norm and have it been Cindy Crawford or some other amazingly hot model.

RIP Norm.

CLIFF: Oh, what's the matter there, big guy?

NORM: That damn “Hungry Heifer” restaurant again. The place is the pits.

CLIFF: Wait. You went back? I thought you hated it there.

NORM: I got lured back by their “surf-and-turf” special.

CLIFF: Oh, yeah. What's that, lobster and steak, huh?

NORM: Tuna fish sandwich with beef gravy.

Parks and Rec gave us a version of that.

"What's going on, Mr. Peterson."

"The question is what's going in Mr. Peterson.  A beer please, Woody."

Interestingly, he was a big 80s, 90s indie rock/punk fan as well. Appeared in the Replacements documentary, Color me Obsessed.

and here is a Minutemen anecdote

I have a lot of very complex thoughts on this...

Instead of rambling...

What's the story, Norm?

Boy meets beer. Boy drinks beer. Boy meets another beer.

Bye Norm!

Norm: I'm outta here I guess.  Going to stop over at the health club.

Frasier:  You belong to a health club?

Norm:  Yeah, Vera gave me a membership for my birthday.  Real subtle, huh?

Frasier:  You actually go there and work out?

Norm:  Yeah, I try to do about 25 in the pool everyday.

Frasier:  Laps?

Norm:  Cannon balls.

RIP

He was good in the movie House too ...not to be confused with House II which continued the Cheers casting with John Ratzenberger.

Me and my roommates back in college had nothing but broadcast television on a 13 inch crt and a Sega console.

Best  time of the day was having a beer with Norm from 10-11. One of the OTA channels would play two episodes every night in the original order of the series. This was our ritual before going out.

Loved Cheers growing up.  All of the characters, including Norm, were lovably flawed and hilarious.  George Wendt gave a ton of people joy and laughter with his perforformance.

Also, Wendt was 33 or 34 years old when he started playing Norm.

RIP super 'Mats fan, George Wendt : r/Replacements

George Wendt was a big fan of the Replacements, and really a lot of indie/alternative/punk bands. See the post above of him at a show in a Billy Bragg t shirt.

For Replacements super-fans, there's a pretty cool documentary called "Color me Obsessed" that interviews fans, other musicians from the Minneapolis scene, roadies, etc. None of the Replacements are in it. But it's still very good.

Anyway, they interview George Wendt and he said he always sort of thought "Here Comes a Regular" was inspired by Norm's Cheers character. That's probably not exactly the case, but Norm is the quintessential "regular" so regardless, it fits.
